Drawing Traffic With a Great Domain Name – How to Choose a Domain Name for Local Business

March 7, 2012 by  Filed under: Domain

It is that simple – if you have a website you need to register a domain name. Of course, it is possible to create a website on a subdomain using website building platforms like Weebly but it is not worth it.

If you, as a small business owner want to have a website you MUST have a domain. Period! Here is why:

1. When people ask you about your website address – you need to tell them. It might be the name of your business or a word that consumers use to search online for the service or product that you offer.

2. Having your website on a subdomain shows like mybusinessname.site.com shows that you are not serious about your online presence. And it is impossible to be remembered. As a result it will more often than not be misspelled. As a result consumers won’t be able to find your business online.

3. Having the right domain name can catapult you to the top of the search engines with little and sometimes with no efforts

Here is what I mean. Say you own a massage place in Chicago called Massage Heaven. You can register massageheaven.com which is great because customers might look up the name of your business online.

In this case your website will be shown on page one in the major search engines after you have built just a few links to it.

However, it is quite possible that people don’t know it by name and in that case that will look up something like massage Chicago, massage therapist Chicago e.t.c.

You’ve got the idea, right

In this case your website most likely won’t be among the first ten that will be return by your favorite search engine.

You will need a lot of back links to do that. However if you register the exact keyword that visitors use to look up the service that you offer (in this case massagetherapistchicago.com) you will need that many links to your site to propel it to top positions.

It makes sense when you think about it. If you are looking for a massage therapist in Chicago and my business name is Chicago Massage Therapist Google thinks (and rightfully so) that my business is the most relevant to what you are looking for.

So the best approach in my opinion when you are about to register a domain name is to register as many as possible.

Register your business name but also the few keyword that your customers use to find the product or service that you offer online. Build similar websites (but not exactly the same) on these domain and start getting visitors and customers to your business.

And don’t forget – register domains with the following extensions only: .com, .net, .org if you want to get your website ranked high in the search engines.

At about $10 per domain per year you have no excuse not to register a few.
