Transferring a Domain Name

November 24, 2011 by  Filed under: Domain

There are several reasons you might like to transfer your domain name. The process of transferring a domain is a bit cumbersome, as it involves many factors. A domain name is registered under your name for a year, and you are required to renew it when it reaches the expiration date.

The domain renewal charges differ with every registrar. You can save a good amount of money by transferring your name to a different registrar that provides renewal of domain at a lower cost. Registrars also sometimes provide hosting services, which is quite advantageous.

There are a few important things that you should know before you make the decision to transfer your domain name. There are different types of domain name transfers, such as:

  1. Transfer of your domain name to a different registrar
  2. Transfer of your domain to another person with the same registrar
  3. Transfer of your domain name to another person with a different registrar
  4. Transfer of the domain name you purchased from another person with the same registrar.
  5. Transfer of the domain name you purchased from another person with a different registrar.

The easiest transfer is from different registrars, as most registrars offer no additional cost on transfer of domain other than cost-related to registering a domain name with them.

Steps to Transfer a Domain Name:

1. You are required to access a domain transfer area in your registrar’s admin panel and enter the domain name you want to transfer to begin the process. The domain transfer may require 3- 8 days. When you initiate a domain transfer, you will receive an email and you will need to click the link received in the email to authorize the domain name transfer.

2. You need to obtain an EPP key that needs to be sent to the domain registrar (receiving registrar) you have selected for transfer. The domain registrar (losing registrar) generally provides a web interface to get the EPP key. The domain must be unlocked before it can be transferred to a different domain registrar (receiving registrar).

3. Once you have the domain name unlocked and also have the EPP key, you can go ahead with the process to transfer your domain.

4. Go to the domain registrar (receiving registrar) and enter the EPP key and details required.

5. The domain registrar (receiving registrar) will send you an email at the administrative contact email address of your domain name to authorize the domain transfer. You are required to click on the link to authorize the transfer. You have a time period of 5 days to respond to the email. You can either accept or deny the transfer.

6. You will receive an email in at your administrative contact email address which confirms the status of your domain transfer.
